SUMMARY

Purpose and significance: Conflict is an issue that occurs in human relations within every aspect of life as a result of various reasons. It describes disagreement, quarrels and struggles that occur within the situations in which individuals’ needs interference or objection towards these needs. Conflicts also occur (were seen) between children and adults as a result of similar reasons. Adults interfere in children’s needs and freedom

domains and as a result of this children react against these attitudes and behaviour, therefore conflicts occur.

These conflicts that occur in human relations, also display themselves in literary arts. Conflicts seen in literary arts is an important issue that make texts start and set texts into action and drag the reader along the text. Children literature reflects some conflicts that children experienced. The quality of conflicts are characteristics factors that provide children opportunities to enter the text attraction in children literature. Conflicts that create tension along the event series and make children end the book can be seen within the contexts of children books as follows:
1. Human-human conflict
2. Human’s own conflict
3. Human-nature conflict
4. Human-society conflict
Human-human conflict describes problems, difficulties, disagreements, irreconcilableness and struggles that occur between main character and other character or characters and forms the subject of the work.

Method:  In this research, only “child-adult conflict” theme under the subject of “human-human conflict” was discussed considering the models taken from Turkish children literature. The aim of this research is to observe the types of conflicts occur between children and adults and study the characteristics of these conflicts. Therefore, 8 authors from Turkish children literature and their texts (novel, story and poem) covering the subject of child-adult conflict were analysed. Besides, two stories of Dede Korkut stories were analysed from the point of the characteristics of conflicts.

Results: Conflicts seen in the books studied generally address children of today. Most of the conflicts result in the favour of adults as they are in our society. Some authors analyze the conflicts reconciling with children, which is an acceptable situation. But two Dede Korkut stories were not suitable to children’s lives and reality of today from the point of the characteristics of conflicts.
A child reader needs to identify himself/herself with characters involved in conflicts and feel the tension occur within the event in order to find pleasure in literature work. Besides, the conflicts occur should be suitable for the principle of appropriateness for children. Conflicts seen in the texts studied generally have characteristics of which a child can identify himself/herself with characters and find pleasure in them. Authors express the problems seen between children and adults, especially the ones seen between children and their family members, taking the facts of our society into consideration. When we consider the subjects and conflicts included in the books, we see that there are messages that the authors want to convey to adults and these are important. Some authors include appropriate and good adults into their fictions, some authors include inappropriate and wrong models; by means of these, they consider adult models that both should be covered and should not be covered with a remarkable way. But, the conflicts seen in the stories of “Salur Kazan’ın Evinin Yagmalanması” and “Basat’ın Tepegöz’ü Öldürmesi” do not address children of today. These stories that can be critized from different perspectives are not suitable for the principle of appropriateness for children from the point of the characterisitcs of the conflicts. But this book and many books similar to this are covered within the list of 100 principal books recommended to children by Ministry of National Education.
